Monitoring immunomodulation strategies in type 1 diabetes

Abstract: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease. Short-term treatment with agents targeting T cells, B cells and inflammatory cytokines to modify the disease course resulted in a short-term pause in disease activity. Lessons learnt from these trials will be discussed in this review. It is expected that effective disease-modifying agents will become available for use in earlier stages of T1D. Progress has been made to analyze antigen-specific T cells with standardization of T cell assay and discov… Show more

“…The human immune system plays a key role in the identification and removal of not only various potentially adverse substances (pathogens) but also aging and cancer cells [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. It also mediates the control of inflammatory conditions [ 4 , 5 ], whereas its dysfunctions initiate the development of autoimmune diseases [ 3 , 6 ], including multiple sclerosis (MS) [ 3 , 7 ], rheumatoid arthritis (RS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) [ 3 , 8 ], and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) [ 3 , 9 , 10 ].…”
