Monitoring hydropower reliability in Malawi with satellite data and machine learning

Abstract: Hydro-climatic extremes can affect the reliability of electricity supply, in particular in countries that depend greatly on hydropower or cooling water and have a limited adaptive capacity. Assessments of the vulnerability of the power sector and of the impact of extreme events are thus crucial for decisionmakers, and yet often they are severely constrained by data scarcity. Here, we introduce and validate an energy-climate-water framework linking remotely-sensed data from multiple satellite missions and instr… Show more

“…Moreover, Lemma and Cochrane emphasized "the issues of policy incoherence, which results in the inefficient and ineffective utilization of scarce resources" (Lemma and Cochrane, 2019, p. 12). In areas that formally have access to electricity, for example, power consumption and supply reliability are basically insufficient in Sub-Saharan Africa (Falchetta et al, 2020). In addition, the federal government, in re-establishing infrastructure equity, needs to recall that the citizens or regional states could value diverse outcomes.…”

“…The emphasis of geological surveying is on the physical appearance of recorded morphological features and other parameters such as river patterns, shape, and disaster risk, which includes land changes, flooding, and faults. Water flow was estimated based on the area of the watershed together with the volume of water rainfall, geological and land use map was interpreted regarding Landsat 8 remote sensing satellite data [21], [34]- [36], while geological map and land use map were employed as a reference for mapping of Geotechnical engineering, the potential hazard of flood and landslide.…”

“…Falchetta et al [52] analyzed the hydro-climatic extremes that affect the reliability of the electricity supply. The framework uses algorithms of random forest regression to reduce data scarcity and estimate volatility in river discharges while ungauged.…”
