Monitoring healthcare professionals after monkeypox exposure: Experience from the first case imported to Asia

Abstract: resolution that banned over-the-counter sales of antimicrobials in drugstores. That measure, focusing on outpatients, was not likely to succeed in controlling CRE spread in hospitals. Nevertheless, there was a substantial decrease in antimicrobial sales in private drugstores in response to public opinion. 10 The extent to which this decrease has influenced or will influence antimicrobial resistance is a matter for further research. We did not perform quantitative or qualitative analysis of press articles conte… Show more

“…Initial observations from imported cases [46,[63][64][65][66], confirmed by this systematic review, suggest that monkeypox's clinical presentation and evolution would differ from the findings of African studies before 2022 and the publications in non-endemic European countries. This review confirms that rash with pruritus, fever, and lymphadenopathy are critical clinical findings, but now, in connection with the potential sexual transmission or transmission due to close contact during sex, is associated more in the 2022 outbreak with rash in the pelvic area and groins (75%) compared to its frequency in African patients (30%).…”

“…Among the 699 confirmed cases, six confirmed cases of monkeypox among HCWs represented a proportion of 0.9% (range of 0.3–3.1% by year), yielding an estimated annual HCW incidence rate of 17.4/10,000, which is much more elevated than that of the general population. In more recent studies conducted in high-income countries [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ], several HCWs were identified as contacts, but most were classified as low risk. Notably, three studies reported monkeypox cases during the COVID-19 pandemic and no secondary occupational infection was reported following the active surveillance.…”

“…Outpatient settings should also be provided, with adequate PPE given the current manifestations of the disease. Post-exposure vaccinations can be given with the available variola vaccines (VARV), ideally within four days of the exposure and up to fourteen days past exposure [ 19 , 20 , 24 ].…”

“…Rodents likely harbor the virus [ 5 ], leading to spillover events. The case of human infection by MPXV was first reported in humans in in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1970 [ 6 ]. The transmission of MPXV from animals to humans may occur by direct or indirect contact with infected organisms (live or dead), while close contact with symptomatic cases is thought to be the main human-to-human transmission mode [ 5 ].…”
