Abstract. Monitoring systems are nowadays ubiquitous in complex environments, such as Grids. Their use is fundamental for performance evaluation, problem spotting, advanced debugging and per-use accounting. Building such systems raises challenging issues, like data gathering from Grid components, low intrusiveness, ease of use, adaptive data visualization, fault-tolerance and self-maintenance. This paper presents a new layered architecture, named Toytle, specifically designed to address these issues in the context of control Grids. All their components, from computing and network resources to complete physical processes with soft time constraints, can be monitored with Toytle. The architecture's layers, namely the distributed core, the hierarchical connections and the local monitors, have been designed to ensure scalability, highspeed sampling and efficient dealing with large data bursts. The future Toytle implementation will adapt existing tools and also create entirely new modules.

Abstract. Adaptation of legacy software to grid services environment is gradually gaining in significance both in academic and commercial settings but presently no comprehensive framework addressing this area is available and the scope of research work covering this field is still unsatisfactory. The main contribution of this paper is the proposal of a versatile architecture designed to facilitate the process of transition to grid services platform. We provide thorough analysis of the presented solution and confront it with fundamental grid requirements. In addition, the results of performance evaluation of a prototype implementation are demonstrated.

Abstract-Cloud resources and services are offered based on Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that state usage terms and penalties in case of violations. Although, there is a large body of work in the area of SLA provisioning and monitoring at infrastructure and platform layers, SLAs are usually assumed to be guaranteed at the application layer. However, application monitoring is a challenging task due to monitored metrics of the platform or infrastructure layer that cannot be easily mapped to the required metrics at the application layer. Sophisticated SLA monitoring among those layers to avoid costly SLA penalties and maximize the provider profit is still an open research challenge. This paper proposes an application monitoring architecture named CASViD, which stands for Cloud Application SLA Violation Detection architecture. CASViD architecture monitors and detects SLA violations at the application layer, and includes tools for resource allocation, scheduling, and deployment. Different from most of the existing monitoring architectures, CASViD focuses on application level monitoring, which is relevant when multiple customers share the same resources in a Cloud environment. We evaluate our architecture in a real Cloud testbed using applications that exhibit heterogeneous behaviors in order to investigate the effective measurement intervals for efficient monitoring of different application types. The achieved results show that our architecture, with low intrusion level, is able to monitor, detect SLA violations, and suggest effective measurement intervals for various workloads.
