Monitoring Fluoride with Honey Bees in the Upper Snake River Plain of Idaho

Abstract: Based on residue concentrations in honey bees (Apis mellifera L.), we mapped the spatial distribution of fluoride across much of the upper Snake River Plain in southeastern Idaho. Our results suggest that facilities at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) intermittently release this chemical. These emissions affect localized areas on the INEL and probably contribute little fluoride to the surrounding region. Phosphate ore processing near Pocatello, ID, is a recurrent fluoride source and influences … Show more

“…Some trace elements in honey are enriched by honey bees relative to the concentration in the environment (Bromenshenk et al, 1996), so that a usefull sensitivity for some elements can be expected (Wallwork-Barber et al, 1982;Bromenshenk et al, 1995).…”

“…Além de informações diretas sobre determinados contaminantes contidos no próprio corpo do inseto, elementos traços podem se acumular também em produtos apícolas, como o mel, devido a altas concentrações no ambiente, tornando assim esses indivíduos ainda mais eficientes para o monitoramento biológico. (BROMENSHENK et al, 1996).…”
