Monitoring Epoxy Coated Steel under Combined Mechanical Loads and Corrosion Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

Abstract: Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been applied to assess strains, stresses, loads, corrosion, and temperature for structural health monitoring (SHM) of steel infrastructure, such as buildings, bridges, and pipelines. Since a single FBG sensor measures a particular parameter at a local spot, it is challenging to detect different types of anomalies and interactions of anomalies. This paper presents an approach to assess interactive anomalies caused by mechanical loading and corrosion on epoxy coated steel s… Show more

“…Through the ages, pipeline integrity monitoring and investigation has been gaining arising attention in industry [1], since the pipeline network is expanding and carrying majority of energy product [2]. Although multiple techniques are posted to monitor the in-line environment [3] [4], the physical sensor [5] passively monitor the changing signal is still the mainstream of industrial application. The traveling portion of a typical PIG is made up of a rigid and hollow center body and two sets of sealing disks.…”

“…Structural integrity is frequently jeopardized by mechano-chemical effects, stemming from the interplay of mechanical loads and chemical assailants, notably corrosion [1], [2]. Among these threats, corrosion poses a significant hazard to steelbased civil structures, including plates, reinforcing bars, and prestressed tendons, hastening their deterioration and diminishing their longevity [3], [4].…”

“…Corrosion-induced structural deterioration is a significant concern in civil infrastructure, as it poses a serious threat to the durability, reliability, and safety of engineering structures [1]. Reinforced concrete and steel are commonly used construction materials that are vulnerable to corrosion, especially when exposed to environmental factors such as moisture, oxygen, and pollutants.…”

“…sensors have been widely used for corrosion monitoring [8]. FBG sensors can be used to detect localized corrosion by monitoring the strain changes caused by the formation of corrosion pits.…”
