Monitoring Depression Treatment Outcomes With the Patient Health Questionnaire-9

Abstract: Well-validated as a diagnostic measure, the PHQ-9 has now proven to be a responsive and reliable measure of depression treatment outcomes. Its responsiveness to treatment coupled with its brevity makes the PHQ-9 an attractive tool for gauging response to treatment in individual patient care as well as in clinical research.

“…The PHQ-9 is a nine-item self-report measure assessing the presence of depression symptoms in the prior 2 weeks, via four Likert-type answer choices ranging from not at all to nearly every day. The PHQ-9 is supported by evidence of validity as a measure of depressive symptoms in medical settings Löwe, Kroenke, Herzog, & Gräfe, 2004;Löwe, Unützer, Callahan, Perkins, & Kroenke, 2004). For the present sample, the PHQ-9 demonstrated good internal consistency with a Cronbach's alpha of .87.…”

“…A minimally clinically important individual PHQ-9 improvement was defined as a 5-point reduction [21]. The internal consistency of the PHQ-9 was good (Cronbach's alpha = 0.83).…”

“…This questionnaire has been shown to have 92% sensitivity and 95% specificity when compared to the gold standard of a clinical diagnosis by a sleep disorders specialist [11]. Depression was characterized as present using both the Patient Health Questionnaire [12] (PHQ-9; score of 9 and above) and/or by use of anti-depressant medications. The PHQ-9 is a 9-item tool that assesses the patients’ frequency of experiencing depressive thoughts or feelings over the prior 2 weeks.…”
