Monitoring and control of active distribution grid

Abstract: Enel Distribuzione and Siemens are developing a new system called "MAGO" (Monitoring and control of Active distribution Grid Operation) to collect and process data regarding distributed generation. The scope of the project is forecasting the distributed generation (DG) on MV networks, aggregating data according to the different sources (solar, wind, hydro, thermal and others). Forecasted production data and real-time measurements will be provided to the operators of Distribution and transmission (TSO) control… Show more

“…Today, electricity demand and renewable distributed generation (DG) forecasting has become a fundamental need for active grid operators. NP-RES generation forecasts are required by distribution system operators (DSOs) and transmission system operators (TSOs) in order to fulfil the grid constraints, dispatch the generators, and satisfy the demand [6]. In the last 10 years, also the Italian electric system has been characterised by an increasing deployment of NP-RES power plants, especially because of a certain distortion of the energy production sector induced by the state incentives in favour of RES.…”

“…In particular, short-term forecasts are required for the purposes of power plant operation, grid balancing, real-time unit dispatching, automatic generation control, and energy trading. On the contrary, longer-term forecasts are of interest to Distribution System Operators (DSO) and Transmission System Operators (TSO) for unit com-Email addresses: pepe@diism.unisi.it (Daniele Pepe), giannibi@diism.unisi.it (Gianni Bianchini), vicino@diism.unisi.it (Antonio Vicino) mitment, scheduling and for improving balance area control (see, e.g., [1,2,3,4] and references therein).…”

“…This information will be more and more available to DSOs in the future, also motivated by the new operational issues related to active distribution networks. Some large DSOs have already equipped their MV control centres with suitable forecasting tools [10].…”
