Steppes and xerothermic grasslands are hotspots of biodiversity, but are threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation. The heath bush-cricket, Gampsocleis glabra, is considered to be a specialist of xerothermic habitats and appears in national red lists as a threatened species in several European countries. The goal of the current research was to determine the habitat requirements of G. glabra in an isolated habitat patch in Poland, at the northern edge of its range. By comparing the composition of plant species and vegetation architecture of vacant and occupied sites in the summers of 2018 and 2019, it was found that this population of G. glabra still maintained a strict specialisation for the xerothermofilous Festuco-Brometea plant community. On the contrary to previous studies, however, Stipa-type grasses were not essential for the occurrence of the species and the majority of occupied areas were based on the plant Brachypodium pinnatum. The physiognomy of plant communities was crucial for the abundance of stridulating males, which showed a preference for dense grasses at 10 cm high. The habitat characteristics of patches occupied by males and females did not differ significantly. The study of habitat requirements of this endangered Orthoptera species in an isolated habitat patch could serve as a prelude to the restoration of similar locations before it becomes extinct. This study may also underpin the development of a global conservation strategy for G. glabra.

Despite its large size, the protected predatory bush-cricket Saga pedo (Pallas, 1771) is difficult to study in the field. This is mainly due to its strong mimicry, prevalent night activity, and low population density. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial behavior of some adult individuals through the use of luminescent tags and recording their occurrences at night. The monitored individuals moved considerably during the oviposition period and were found more frequently in small sections of the study area. Two models for count data were implemented to try to explain this behavior. The results indicate that their spatial behavior was predominantly related to the prey availability in the available environment. In addition, predation on the HymenopteraSphex funerarius Gussakovskij, 1934 is reported for the first time.

Zusammenfassung Südmähren ist eine faunistisch diverse Region im Süden Tschechiens. Das liegt sowohl an der geologischen Vielgestaltigkeit der Landschaft, die sich zum Beispiel im Bereich des grenzüberschreitenden Nationalparks Thayatal abbildet, als auch an der Tatsache, dass hier das herzynische Waldland Westeuropas und die pannonische Steppenregion Südosteuropas aneinander stoßen. Bei zehn einwöchigen zoologischen Exkursionen für Biologiestudierende der Universität Duisburg‐Essen zwischen 2009 und 2018 konnte eine ganze Reihe faszinierender Tierarten im Gebiet beobachtet oder gefangen und besprochen werden. Der Schwerpunkt der Beobachtungen lag auf der Avifauna, die so verschiedene Arten wie zum Beispiel Grauammer, Schwarzstorch, Wiedehopf, Bienenfresser oder Eisvogel und Drosselrohrsänger als Brutvögel aufweist. Ebenfalls starke Beachtung erfuhr die Herpetofauna. Östliche Smaragdeidechse und Äskulapnatter sind stellenweise häufig und gut zu beobachten, Laubfrosch, Feuersalamander und Rotbauchunke sind ebenfalls anzutreffen. Zu den bemerkenswerten Säugetieren zählt der Europäische Ziesel. Und auch unter den Wirbellosen findet man charismatische Spezies, etwa die Goldaugenspringspinne, die mährische Röhrenspinne oder die Sägeschrecke. Viele Arten werden im vorliegenden Artikel im Kontext ihrer Lebensräume kurz vorgestellt. Eine Artenliste mit den während der Exkursionen sicher festgestellten Wirbeltieren Südmährens ergänzt den zoologischen Reisebericht.
