Monitoring and assessment of surface water quality in Taquari-Antas Watershed, South Brazil—region with intensive pig farming

Abstract: Pig farming is one of the human activities carried out to meet the increasing food demand by the increasing population. South Brazil is the region with most intensive pig farming in the country, exerting pressure on the water and soil environments by the relevant pollutant emissions. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to assess pig farming pollution by monitoring superficial water qualities of the Taquari-Antas Watershed in South Brazil. The study area is about 8062 km (south latitude 292,614, 282,… Show more

“…Our results suggest that the existing fertiliser recommendations have promoted phosphorus dispersion into the environment. This dispersion may have been particularly intense on farms where soil fertility was built up by intensive organic fertilisation (Leinweber et al 1997 ; Schneider et al 2016 ). On the other hand, the obtained results indicate the need to develop original critical DSP-1 M3 values for Poland correlated with the amount of phosphorus flowing out of arable soils.…”

“…The key water quality index (WQI) was created by choosing and presenting an accumulation function [21]. The WQI index has been utilized for qualitative zoning of the aquifers for drinking purposes and also for determining the ideal locations for drinking water wells in a lots of research works such as those of Effendi and Wardiatno [22], Chen et al [23], Bodrud-Doza et al [24], Fijani et al [25], Schneider et al [26], Khan and Qureshi [27], and Oyinkuro and Rowland [28].…”

“…The key water quality index (WQI) was created by choosing and presenting an accumulation function (Simos et al, 2008). WQI index is utilized for qualitative zoning of the aquifers from the drinking aspect and also for determining the proper places of drinking water wells in a lots of research plots such as Effendi and Wardiatno 2015;Chen et al, 2015;Bodrud-Doza et al, 2016;Fijani et al, 2017;Schneider et al, 2016;Khan and Qureshi, 2018;Oyinkuro and Rowland, 2018. A Geographical Information System (GIS) is a capable instrument for putting away, controlling, examining, and mapping spatial information for making decisions in a multiple regions at one time, which fundamental issues is a good example of it .…”
