Monitoring and analysis of burning in coal tailing dumps: a case study from the Czech Republic

Abstract: The tailings are significant geological environments in mining and industrial regions. They represent special engineering-geological zones of anthropogenic sediments that require specific engineering-geological investigation. In particular, it is important to examine the sites in detail with regard to their potential heterogeneity. The article deals with an important engineering-geological issue of burning in coal mine and coal tailing dumps. A case study was implemented in a tailing dump in Heřma-nice located… Show more

“…In thermally active zones secondary conglomerates and porcelanites may occur. The percentage of the residual combustible material in the form of coal fragments or coal mass particles dispersed in associated rocks varies and most frequently ranges from 12 to 20% (JelíNek et al 2015).…”

“…However, a number of cases in European coal mines are reported in the literature (e.g. Hajra et al 2009;Jelínek et al 2015;Nyssen and Vermeersch 2010). The occurrence of spontaneous combustion is related to the content of coal and iron sulphides.…”

“…Long-term storage conditions (pressure, temperature, migration of water, and even surface insolation and drying cycles) can cause their physical and chemical activation. Various geochemical processes take place in the produced mass; new technogenic elements are formed, which are carried outside the storages, having a negative impact on the ecology, getting into the human environment [4,5],…”
