Monitor-While-Drilling-based estimation of rock mass rating with computational intelligence: The case of tunnel excavation front

Abstract: The construction of tunnels has serious geomechanical uncertainties involving matters of both safety and budget. Nowadays, modern machinery gathers very useful information about the drilling process: the so-called Monitor While Drilling (MWD) data. So, one challenge is to provide support for the tunnel construction based on this on-site data .Here, an MWD based methodology to support tunnel construction is introduced: a Rock Mass Rating (RMR) estimation is provided by an MWD rocky based characterization of the… Show more

“…For example, Wang et al [ 19 ] used the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm to establish a model for predicting the level of the rock around the TBM. Galende-Hernández et al [ 20 ] considered the rotation speed and penetration rate to perform the unsupervised clustering of geology and predict the rock mass rating (RMR). Culí et al [ 21 ] considered the cutting wheel torque, penetration rate, and other parameters to assess the surrounding hydrological characteristics.…”

“…In recent decades, advanced measure-while-drilling (MWD) technology has been rapidly developed to create the opportunities to assess the geological conditions ahead of a tunnel face in broad tunneling projects [24][25][26][27]. The MWD technology can therefore be considered a robust technique for detailed characterization of large rock masses, provided that the raw data are treated properly and effective analysis is applied.…”
