Brazil has a high rate of mothers living without a partner as well as a high intergenerational co-residence rate, including parents and grandparents. These family types may influence a child’s well-being. Even though there is no evidence of sex-selective abortion in Brazil, sex preference could still be subtly present. This paper tests the composition of family structure (father co-residence, grandmother co-residence, and birth of siblings) in Brazil associated with the sex of the child by using a nationally representative household survey, treating sex of the first and second child as exogenous variables in OLS regressions. I found women with lower birth-order daughters are less likely to live with a partner. I also found suggestive evidence that maternal grandmothers are more likely to live with granddaughters than with grandsons. Women with lower birth-order daughters are more likely to have additional children. Evidence suggests that in Brazil, fathers show a preference for sons over daughters, while grandmothers show a preference for granddaughters over grandsons. Additionally, mothers of girls, without co-residing partners may compensate for the economic loss caused by their lack of partner by living with their own mother. This contributes to the literature on child sex preferences, which has mostly focused on males (fathers); I have analyzed data on grandmothers to include females.

O objetivo deste artigo é mensurar o impacto da estrutura familiar na desigualdade de oportunidades brasileira entre 2001 e 2013, usando dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD). Para isso, foi estimado o efeito de tratamento médio a partir do propensity score matching, tendo como tratamento a composição familiar (biparental ou monoparental), controlado por um conjunto de variáveis de circunstâncias e proxies para esforço. Além disso, uma análise de sensibilidade e o retorno da educação foram estimados como robustez. Entre os resultados é mostrado que ser filho de uma família biparental revela um diferencial de rendimentos entre 9% a 15% a mais em detrimento dos filhos de família monoparental chefiada pela mãe.

La Encuesta Intercensal 2015, del Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática (INEGI), permite realizar un análisis estadístico detallado de las estructuras de familia en el estado de Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave, México. Para tal fin, utilizamos un enfoque multidimensional que considera cinco componentes fundamentales: dinámicas de autoridad, marco normativo de derechos y obligaciones, vínculos de parentalidad, procesos de estabilidad o transición, y sistemas básicos y complementarios de relaciones sociales. Al aplicar esta perspectiva analítica, encontramos cuatro tipos principales de hogares familiares en Veracruz, según estén encabezados por parejas casadas, parejas en unión libre, jefas y jefes de familia solos, divididos en 22 subtipos diferentes. En conjunto, abarcan 88.16% de los hogares de la entidad federativa, a lo que debemos sumar un 10.71% de hogares de personas solas, además de otro grupo pequeño conformado por cuatro tipos de hogares: corresidentes, de probable poligamia, parejas del mismo sexo y no especificados (1.13% en conjunto).
