Momentary Induction of Inhibitory Control and Its Effects on Uncertainty

Abstract: Deficient inhibitory control and difficulty resolving uncertainty are central in psychopathology. How these factors interact remains unclear. Initial evidence suggests that inducing inhibitory control improves resolution of uncertainty. This may occur only when participants overcome action tendencies, which are dominant tendencies to perform certain behaviors. Our study explored the links between inhibitory control and behavioral responses to uncertainty while manipulating action-tendencies’ strength. In three… Show more

“…There are discrepancies between subjective reports and objective tasks assessing resolution of uncertainty or decision-making under uncertainty. Healthy adults' objective resolution of uncertainty may differ under certain conditions, but their subjective estimate of uncertainty remains constant in these different conditions (Linkovski, Rodriguez, Wheaton, Henik, & Anholt, 2021). In other studies, the association between subjective intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and subjective anxiety severity was higher than the association between IU and objective decision-making under uncertainty (Luhmann, Ishida, & Hajcak, 2011).…”

“…The pre-event cortical activity in the alpha and lower beta band can be interpreted such that increased ongoing low beta activity reflects a memory forming state, which is likely to be moderated by modality-independent alpha specific attentional or inhibitory processes [ 57 ]. The inhibitory control activity was also reported to improve the resolution of uncertainty [ 70 ]. Hence, relatively high alpha power for less familiar stimuli might induce more inhibitory control to resolve uncertainty.…”
