MOMENT – Management of Otitis Media with Effusion in Cleft Palate: protocol for a systematic review of the literature and identification of a core outcome set using a Delphi survey

Abstract: BackgroundCleft palate (CP) has an incidence of approximately 1 in 700. Children with CP are also susceptible to otitis media with effusion (OME), with approximately 90% experiencing nontrivial OME. There are several approaches to the management of OME in children with CP. The Management of Otitis Media with Effusion in Children with Cleft Palate (MOMENT) study is a feasibility study that includes the development of a core outcome set for use in future trials of the management of OME in children with CP.Method… Show more

“…Harman et al . proposed five core questions that could be used to assess how transparently researchers had identified and reported their choice of outcomes11, whilst the ORBIT criteria are used to determine whether it is likely that data is missing from the studies report5. The percentage of studies meeting all five of Harman et al .’s core criteria for complete, transparent outcome reporting, and the percentage of studies reporting full data, as described by the ORBIT criteria were calculated for all outcomes investigated.…”

“…These components will instead be identified through subsequent literature review; discussion at the consensus meeting; and, if necessary, a separate ‘how to measure’ meeting. The use of systematic reviews to inform phase 1 of a Delphi process is recommended by the COMET Initiative [12] and has previously been used in the development of other COSs, including in the Management of Otitis Media with Effusion in Cleft Palate study [13]. …”

“…17 One strategy to deal with these issues is development of a core outcome set (COS). [18][19][20] A COS is a list of outcomes that should be measured and reported in all clinical trials. Robust development of a COS ensures that researchers report on outcomes that are relevant to all major stakeholders.…”
