Moment analysis of chromatographic behavior in reversed‐phase liquid chromatography

Abstract: Chromatographic behavior, such as sample retention, band broadening, elution peak profile, column efficiency, separation performance, and so on, depends on both the retention equilibrium and mass transfer kinetics in the column. A great number of research works have been carried out so far on the retention equilibrium in chromatography. However, chromatographic behavior has not so abundantly been investigated from kinetic points of view because of some essential difficulties of kinetic study. Additionally, in … Show more

“…Moment analysis has been comprehensively discussed in the literature for fully porous particles, see for example , , Kucera (1965), Schneider and Smith (1968), Suzuki (1973), Wolff et al (1979), Wolff et al (1980), Ruthven (1984), Lenhoff (1987), Gengliang and Zhide (1996), Antos et al (2003), Guiochon et al (2006), Miyabe and Guiochon (2000, 2007, 2009. In these partly classical papers analytical expressions have been generated for specific chromatographic models and boundary conditions.…”

“…Moment analysis is an effective method for deducing important information about the retention equilibrium and mass transfer kinetics in the column [3,4,9,12,13,15,17,18,23]. The first and second moments predict the retention time and variance of the concentration profiles, respectively.…”

“…The moments are used to get expressions for retention times, band broadenings, front asymmetries and kurtosis. Such moment analysis is well-known and the approach has been found instructive in the literature [3,4,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][15][16][17][18]. In this manuscript, the first four moments of the EDM and LKM are derived analytically for rectangular pulse injections under linear conditions.…”
