Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Coating on AISI 316 Stainless Steel by Thermo-Diffusion Method

Abstract: Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is one of the most widely used solid lubricants applied in different ways on the surfaces under friction. In this work, AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel was coated with MoS 2 , using thermo-diffusion method at different temperatures and times. Coatings properties were investigated using SEM, EDX, XRD and FTIR, Hardness Tester and Roughness tester. The results illustrated the formation of a uniform layer on the surface, containing MoS 2 and MoO 3-X phases. The thickness, grain s… Show more

“…At a sliding speed of 3.5 µm per second and a load of 30 µN, a friction coefficient of 0.88 was determined for steel-Si, which proves that the result reported by Qing [19] can be obtained in an easier way-without the need to build a dedicated micro-friction test apparatus. Under the same load and sliding speed, a steel-MoS 2 pair (measurements performed in the air at a humidity of 50%) yielded a friction coefficient of 0.22, which agrees with the results of previous research realized at the macroscale [20,21].…”

“…A solid material with a two-dimensional structure has been identified as a typical solid lubricant; e.g., MoS 2 particles and coatings [19] and graphite [20] are frequently employed in industries to reduce the friction and galling in hot forming. In particular, a graphite mold provides a solution for the mold stamping of oxide glasses to optical lenses [21]; the lens surfaces are often contaminated by the dust of graphite.…”

“…[ 30 ] Furthermore, we assigned Mo‐related absorption peaks at 620, 1630, and 1117 cm −1 to the Mo–S vibrations [ 31 ] and those at 602, 825, and 992 cm −1 to the Mo–O vibrations. [ 32 ] In the Raman spectra, the MoS 2 thin film intensity of the out‐of‐plane mode of A 1g at 409 cm −1 was stronger than the in‐plane vibrational mode of E 2g at 380 cm −1 . [ 33 ] The difference in shifts is highly dependent on the film thickness, and the value of 29 cm −1 indicates a very thick film.…”
