Molybdate Recovery by Adsorption onto Silica Matrix and Iron Oxide Based Composites

Abstract: Aggressive industrial development over the last century involved different heavy metals being used, including high quantities of molybdenum, which need to be treated before discharge in industrial waters. Molybdenum’s market price and industrial applicability make its recovery a big challenge. In the present study the possibility to recover molybdenum ions from aqueous solutions by adsorption on a composite material based on silica matrix and iron oxides—SiO2FexOy—was evaluated. Tests were performed in order t… Show more

“…However, there are some small changes observed after the introduction of APTES, the main difference being the presence of the NH 2 peak, which is expected to be seen in multiple regions-1650-1550 cm −1 and 1370-1000 cm −1 (deformation vibrations)-together with a NH 3 rocking vibration at 950-590 cm −1 . The fact that present frequencies are lower due to the coordination and subsequent weakening of the N-H bond should be highlighted [51]. The aforementioned bands are visible in the spectra, hence more as a "shoulder" due to the fluorescence effect.…”

“…Following previous work [19], SiO 2 Fe x O y xerogel is synthesized using the sol-gel method, using tetraethyl-orthosilicate-TEOS, Si (OC 2 H 5 ) 4 , (SigmaAldrich) (7 mL) as silica precursors and iron (II) acetylacetonate, C 10 H 14 FeO 4 , Fe(acac) 2 (SigmaAldrich, Burlington, MA, USA) (0.54 g) as iron oxide precursors. The TEOS is dissolved in 37.2 mL of ethanol (Chimopar, SC CHIMOPAR TRADING SRL, Bucharest, Romania) and stirred for 10 min at 500 rpm using a magnetic stirrer (DLAB MS-HS); then, 13.8 mL of deionised water is added and stirred for 30 more minutes.…”
