Molluscicidal activity ofBalanites aegyptiacaagainstMonacha cartusiana

Abstract: To study the structure-activity relationship, a triterpenoidal saponin and a triterpenoidal saponins rich extract (of Zygophyllum coccenum) were proven to be inactive. Thus, the activity is associated with the steroidal, not triterpenoidal saponins. Moreover, a spirostane aglycone without sugar moiety, was found to be inactive and attained the activity by glycosidation.

“…The number of dead juveniles was counted using a stereo-binocular microscope throughout time periods of 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. Totally motionless (dead larvae) nematodes were picked out of the Petri dish and placed in distilled water. Percent mortality was calculated using Abbott’s formula [ 43 ]. where, Nt = Mortality in treatment; Nc = Mortality in control.…”

“…This activity took place in ideal laboratory conditions, with a temperature of 27 °C and a relative humidity of 75–80%. The mortality (%) was calculated after 24, 48, and 72 h of the treatment using Abbott’s formula [ 43 ]. LC 50 values were analyzed using Probit analysis [ 46 ].…”

“…LC 90 values were 77.70, 120.04, 89.50 and 97.55 mg/L against Biomphalariapfeifferi for seed, endocarp, mesocarp and whole fruit extracts, respectively, and 102.30, 138.21, 115.42 and 127.69 mg/L against Lymnaea natalensis. Furthermore, the molluscicidal activity of seed oil on Monacha cartusiana, a Hygromiid land snail, has been demonstrated [77]. Bioactive compounds were identified as saponins, such as diosgenin, yamogenin and 3,5-spirostadiene.…”

“…The content of saponin compounds is reported to have a molluscicidal effect (Abdul Aziz et al, 2021;Dawidar et al, 2012;El Aziz et al, 2019;Murthy et al, 2020). The toxicity of this substance is high enough for gold snails to be able to kill them (Chengjun et al, 2021).…”
