“…Mean size diameter (Mz) and sorting (Sort), expressed in φ (phi), were determined using the Folk and Ward formulas (Folk and Ward, 1957 Giannuzzi-Savelli et al , 1997-2003) as well as contributions more specifically devoted to the East Mediterranean faunas (Pallary, 1911;Danin, 1982, 1992). As for the palaeoenvironmental interpretation, the molluscan assemblages have been interpreted according to the Mediterranean benthic bionomy of Pérès and Picard (1964), Picard (1965), and Pérès (1982) and according to contributions on Mediterranean ecology and palaeoecology (Bernasconi et al, 1991;Bernasconi and Robba, 1993;Bernasconi and Stanley, 1997). Molluscan assemblages have been identified in 19 out of 23 examined samples; they are more diversified (either for number of species or number of specimens) in the mid-lower sector of the core, between ~7 and 13 m; in the mid-upper core, molluscs are represented by 1 or 2 species, attaining a maximum of 3 specimens per sample; the whole specimens are generally associated with a large amount of fragmented, unidentifiable shell material.…”

“…As discussed by Basso and Corselli (2002), the conceptual framework based on communities appears to oversimplify the picture of the most important ecological units in the Mediterranean benthos. The benthic bionomy that derives from a qualitative approach (Pérès and Picard, 1964) has been successfully adopted for ecological, as well as palaeoecological studies in the Mediterranean area (e.g., Bernasconi and Robba, 1993;D'Alessandro and Massari, 1997;Di Geronimo and La Perna, 1997;Basso and Corselli, 2002). The recent age of the studied deposits allows to use the qualitative approach for a more detailed reconstruction of palaeoenvironments.…”

“…1A'). This Pliocene outcrop has been well known since the 20 th century thanks to its rich mollusc faunas (mainly gastropods) as documented by several studies (e.g., Bernasconi & Robba 1984, 1994Solsona & Martinell 1999;Andri et al 2005;Harzhauser & Kronenberg 2008). Published micropalaeontological data (Violanti 1987;Mancin et al 2012) pointed out the depositional environment of the Rio Torsero section, which probably recorded the sedimentation in the circalittoral zone, close to the shelf edge.…”
