Molecular Targets of Natural Compounds with Anti-Cancer Properties

Abstract: Cancer is the second leading cause of death in humans. Despite rapid developments in diagnostic methods and therapies, metastasis and resistance to administrated drugs are the main obstacles to successful treatment. Therefore, the main challenge should be the diagnosis and design of optimal therapeutic strategies for patients to increase their chances of responding positively to treatment and increase their life expectancy. In many types of cancer, a deregulation of multiple pathways has been found. This inclu… Show more

“…Interestingly, they found that RES restored DOX-induced deficiency of compensated hypertrophic response to the late-onset hypertension, as indicated by the alleviated CMA and increased heart wall thickness (25). Of note, some polyphenolic compounds have shown the effectiveness against cancer cells both in vivo and in vitro (158).…”

“…In addition, some of them can cross the BBB and this property is one of the main considerations for the development of therapies for the CNS [ 43 ]. The antioxidant nature and chemopreventive potential against cancer has been recognized for a wide range of natural compounds, including curcumin, epigallocatechin (EGCG), and resveratrol (RES) [ 44 ]. The main focus of our review work is to discuss the effect of these natural compounds in the prevention and treatment of glioblastoma.…”

“…The anti-oxidant capabilities of polyphenols have a knock-on effect of regulating micro-environments by scavenging ROS and reduce oxidative stress, resulting in reductions in inflammation, or cancer cell proliferation and the effects of other metabolic diseases ( Section 4.2 ), while further being capable of directly interacting with proteins, enzymes, and other metabolites within immunological and metabolic pathways. The relationships between epigenetic effects of polyphenols and immune responses, anti-cancer effects, and other diseases have been reviewed extensively [ 158 , 159 , 169 , 177 ]). Despite this, the effects of various polyphenols in vivo are not as well tested outside of murine models, although there has been an increased focus on how supplementation of farm animals such as pigs with dietary polyphenols can result in increases in anti-oxidant activity, reductions in inflammatory biomarkers, and changes in microbiome species populations ( Section 3.4 ).…”
