“…nov. were perforated and one shows a repaired shell. This confirms indirectly the mentioned presumption of Liu and Hershler (2005) about the parallel evolution between fishes and snails also for Viesca and is, at the same time, a good example of how biology and paleontology can be mutually supportive. Shells of the described two species of Pyrgulopsis are present in the section of Viesca only in a thin layer and we do not know why they became extinct.…”

“…Hershler (1985) later added to the same valley Nymphophilus acarinatus, a second smaller congener with rounded whorls. The genus was conchologically well characterized; however, molecular genetic studies of Liu and Hershler (2005) showed that Nymphophilus is little differentiated from Pyrgulopsis and should therefore be treated as a synonym. These authors suggest that the unusual strong and large shells of Nymphophilus (sensu Czaja et al (2015) interpreted small holes in many shells from Viesca and Cuatrociénegas as perforations of a fish predator.…”

“…Partial sequences of the COI and NADH dehydrogenase subunit I (NDI) genes were obtained for 2-10 specimens from each sample, totaling 84 new sequences for COI (see explanation below for NDI). Six previously published COI sequences of P. gilae (Hurt 2004;Liu and Hershler 2005) and representative sequences from 11 other congeners were also included in the phylogenetic analysis. Trees were rooted with sequences of Floridobia floridana following Hershler et al (2003).…”

“…The hydrobiid gastropod genus Pyrgulopsis (134 species), which originated (minimally) in the late Miocene (Liu and Hershler 2005), is one of the most diverse elements of the western North American aquatic biota. Most of the tiny species (1-8 mm shell height) in this genus (commonly known as springsnails) have very small geographic ranges, which often consist of a single spring or single spring complex.…”

“…Previous studies of this species have focused on its ecology, life history (Mladenka and Minshall 2001) and recent decline (Myler et al 2007). The only previously published genetic data for P. bruneauensis are mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from a single specimen which was delineated as a divergent (4.9-10.4% COI) terminal of uncertain relationships within the genus (Liu and Hershler 2005). Here we provide a baseline assessment of the genetic diversity, population structure and phylogenetic relationships of P. bruneauensis based on analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences.…”
