Molecular study of the quasispecies evolution of a typical pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 after serial passages in pigeons by contact

Abstract: The quasispecies nature of a typical pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 (pPMV-1) was, for the first time, studied under conditions close to the natural infectious environment. The virus was serially passaged in pigeons by successive contacts. Viral heterogeneity was analysed in the kidneys and brain of five pigeons from the last contact, by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reactions performed on RNA directly extracted from the organ and targeting the P and HN genes of the virus. The viral diversity following in… Show more

“…Newcastle disease virus (NDV) which is also called avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 (APMV-1) is a single stranded, enveloped, negative sense RNA virus belonging to the genus Rubulavirus of subfamily Paramyxovirinae and family Paramyxoviridiae (Barbezange and Jestin, 2005;Mayo, 2002). Based on pathogenic and virulence properties, NDV is categorized into three major pathotypic strains i.e.…”

“…ND results in dyspnoea, dysentery, neurological disorders, and serosal and mucosal haemorrhages, with high morbidity and mortality in chickens (Aldous and Alexander 2001;Barbezange and Jestin 2005). In addition, it can lead to substantial economic losses due to international trade restrictions and closures.…”
