Pd(II) complexes [PdBr(A-κ(3)CNC)]Br (1) and [PdBr(B-κ(3)CNC)]Br (2) with new CNC pincer-type ligands derived from 1,2,4-triazolin-5-ylidenes have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclei NMR spectroscopies, ESI mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analysis. The more soluble complex 1 proved to be an efficient pre-catalyst in copper- and amine-free Sonogashira reaction with high turnover numbers. The potential for recycling of the catalyst was also demonstrated.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been widely employed in the construction of various metal complexes and applied in the field of catalysis. In this review, a series of palladium complexes comprising chelating bis(NHC) donors (Pd-bis(NHC) complexes) are outlined according to their application in homogeneous catalysis. Examples of metal-organic frameworks containing Pd-bis(NHC) moieties are briefly discussed, in terms of their use in heterogeneous catalysis. The catalytic applications of Pd-bis(NHC) complexes (or moieties in heterogeneous catalysts) are mainly focused on the Mizoroki-Heck, Suzuki-Miyaura, and Sonogashira coupling reactions. Another 14 types of reactions are also summarized beyond these three types of reactions.

Reaction of 2,6-bis(3-butylbenzimidazol-1-ium)pyridine dibromide with silver oxide affords a dinuclear complex of the type [L 2 Ag 2 ] 2+ [L = 2,6-bis(3-butylbenzimidazolin-2ylidene)pyridine]. 1 H NMR spectroscopic studies suggest that the dinuclear structure is also present in solution. Transmetallation of the silver-NHC complex with PdCl 2 (CH 3 CN) 2 yields a mononuclear palladium complex of the type [LPdCl] + , with a chelating C,N,C-pincer ligand.
