Molecular Structure of Azopolymers and Photoinduced 3D Orientational Order. 1. Azobenzene Polyesters

Abstract: The combination of transmission null ellipsometry (TNE) and attenuated total reflection (ATR) methods supported by absorption measurements is shown to be an effective tool to study spontaneous and photoinduced 3D order in azopolymers. We investigated a series of azobenzene containing side-chain polyesters differing by the length of the main-chain spacer (CH2) m (m = 2, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16) and the tail substitutes (NO2, OCH3, and OC4H9) in azochromophore. The 3D order was induced by monochromatic polariz… Show more

“…7. Such atypical behavior in some azobenzene functionalized polymers has been reported by Yaroshchuk et al [40]. After long-time irradiation the initially induced optical anisotropy (Δn) converges to a smaller value, which was explained by a preferential out-of-plane molecular orientation of chromophores and polymer chains.…”

“…We give an example in Figure 3. The polymer used in this experiment is one of those studied in reference [15], by other experimental methods based on birefringence measurements. The material is first illuminated with unpolarized UV light, which produces the almost stable cis form (an absorption band appears in 450-500 nm region).…”
