“…In addition to its skin whitening property which has been known for at least seven decades, arbutin (1) has been shown to possess various other therapeutically relevant biological properties, e.g., antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory [164,165]; it also has the potential as an anticancer agent [166][167][168][169][170][171][172][173][174][175][176][177][178][179][180][181]. Information obtained from the published literature on arbutin shows that this compound possesses cytotoxic properties against several human cancer and tumor cell lines including bladder, bone, brain, breast, cervical, colon, gastric, liver, prostate and skin cancers (Table 2) [166][167][168][169][170][171][172][173][174][175][176][177][178][179][180][181]. Most of these activities have been demonstrated in vitro, and in some cases, plausible mechanisms of action, e.g., apoptosis, have been identified (Table 2).…”

“…Arbutin, hydroquinone O-(α/β)-D-glucopyranoside, is a natural compound found in the leaves of Ericaceae plants (Bearberry). As a member of phenolic glycosides, arbutin possesses unique biological activities of antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory (Jurica et al 2017 ), and anti-tumor (Takebayashi et al 2010 ; Dong-Seok Kim et al 2011 ; Lee and Kim 2012 ; Su et al 2020 ; Yi et al 2020 ; Nahar et al 2022 ), assuming its clinical application in the treatment of urinary tract infections, kidney stones, cystitis (Schindler et al 2002 ; Zhu et al 2018 ), and respiratory diseases (Zhou et al 2019 ). Moreover, arbutin, particularly its α-isomer has a greater inhibitory activity on tyrosinase than the β-isomer (Aung et al 2020 ), serves as a potent tyrosinase inhibitor that blocks the production of melanin in vivo.…”

“…The formation of the two isomers is based on the binding state of HQ and the anomeric carbon atom in the glucose molecule ( Hazman et al, 2021 ). Beneficial properties attributed to the isomers include anti-oxidative ( Yu et al, 2015 ), anti-inflammatory ( Lee & Kim, 2012 ), anti-microbial ( Jurica et al, 2017 ), and anti-cancer ( Su et al, 2020 ) effects. The list of potential applications of arbutin is growing ( Saeedi et al, 2021 ).…”
