The molecular characterisation of 18 new populations of Reticulitermes is here presented for COII and 16S genes; results are elaborated and compared to all available ones, at distances and gene trees (Maximum Parsimony, Maximum likelihood, Bayesian analysis) levels. Within the R. lucifugus complex, a subspecific rank of differentiation appears tenable for Italian (R. lucifugus lucifugus, R. lucifugus corsicus) and European (R. lucifugus banyulensis, R. lucifugus grassei) taxa; a subspecific differentiation emerges also for the Sicilian samples. The existence of two different entities in the area formerly defined as inhabited by R. balkanensis is demonstrated; The north-eastern Italian Reticulitermes sp. is found to be more widely distributed in northern and south-eastern Italy and shows a close relationship to the sample from Peloponnese; the GenBank sample from continental Greece, on the contrary, appears more related to other eastern taxa such as R. lucifugus from Turkey and R. clypeatus from Israel; the distribution and differentiation of eastern Reticulitermes taxa are explained through the role that southern Balkans should have played as glacial refuge. Present data also evidences instances of anthropic involvement in taxa distribution; for one of these, the importation of at least a family group is taken into account.

The results pointed out certain clinical variations which do not support natural hybridization among the collected samples (Marini and Mantovani, 2002). Ribosomal molecular markers like 16s rDNA and hybridization based markers like RFLP, can be used for identification of Harini and Pranesh 53 termites, which lack distinguishable morphological characters among different species .…”

The comprehensive analysis of five identified and two unknown termite species with their binary scores of three markers viz., morphological, ISSR scoring and 28s rDNA sequence has been made to reveal in unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) cluster that Trinervitermes biformis (Wasmann) is out grouped with 35.7% of dissimilarity with other species; Odontotermes obesus (Rambur) and Odontotermes redemanni (Wasmann) share same cluster with 32.7% of dissimilarity; similarly Odontotermes ceylonicus (Wasmann) and Odontotermes horni (Wasmann) share a maximum of 32.5% of dissimilarity. The UNKNOWN01 had more similarity with O. obesus (Rambur) and O. obesus (Rambur) in turn showed high similarity with that of O. redemanni (Wasmann). UNKNOWN02 was found along with O. ceylonicus (Wasmann) and O. horni (Wasmann). The study imparts cumulative or comprehensive analysis using different markers such as morphological, ISSR and nuclear genes like 28s rDNA that depict accurate measures of genetic diversity among different species of termites.

The genus Reticulitermes has a Holartic distribution and is widely represented in southern Europe. It is established in Portugal, across the full range of ambient environmental conditions, using different types of wood resources, as available, and nesting ubiquitously in many types of soil. Sequencing of part of the mtDNA COII gene revealed that all the specimens sampled on a north-south transect of the country were Reticulitermes grassei (considered synonymous with R. lucifugus grassei). Nevertheless, an association between the genetic and the geographical distances of sampled specimens was shown, leading to the conclusion that discrete termite populations have differentiated in situ. The geographic component of the genetic polymorphism should be the subject for further research.
