“…Since its first description by Feytaud (1924) the taxonomic status of this taxon has repeatedly changed, being alternatively considered as a distinct species, a form of R. flavipes imported in Europe, or a subspecies of R. lucifugus (review in Lozzia, 1990). Recent molecular analyses agree in its derivation from north American R. flavipes samples introduced in Europe through commerce Marini and Mantovani, 2002). Records indicate that R. santonensis expanded its range during the 20th century along trade corridors such as canals and railroads (Verkerk and Lainé, 2000).…”

“…The sympatric association between different species of Reticulitermes was analysed using mtDNA, 16s rDNA, NADH dehydrogenase and gas chromatography markers. The results pointed out certain clinical variations which do not support natural hybridization among the collected samples (Marini and Mantovani, 2002). Ribosomal molecular markers like 16s rDNA and hybridization based markers like RFLP, can be used for identification of Harini and Pranesh 53 termites, which lack distinguishable morphological characters among different species .…”

“…All known infestations in Portugal involve termites from the species complex hitherto referred to as Reticulitermes lucifugus (Rossi), which is thought to be indigenous. The taxonomy of this genus is currently under review, as the use of molecular markers provides new phylogenetic insights (eg Clément et al, 2001;Jenkins et al, 2001;Marini and Mantovani, 2001;Austin et al, 2002). In the Mediterranean area overall, as many as seven species have been proposed (Clément et al, 2001), based on raising some morphotypes or genotypes to the species level.…”

“…If changes in CHC can be induced by external factors, this may compromise the use of the character in phylogenetic reconstruction. More recently, molecular genetic methods have been introduced to gain insight into termite phylogeny (eg Jenkins et al, 2001;Marini and Mantovani, 2001;Austin et al, 2002).…”
