Molecular profile of the unique species of traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese seahorse (Hippocampus kuda Bleeker)

Abstract: A cDNA library of male Chinese seahorse (Hippocampus kuda Bleeker) was constructed to investigate the molecular pro¢le of seahorse as one of the most famous traditional Chinese medicine materials, and to reveal immunological and physiological mechanisms of seahorse as one of the most primitive vertebrates at molecular level. A total of 3372 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) consisting of 1911 unique genes (345 clusters and 1566 singletons) were examined in the present study. Identi¢cation of the genes related to … Show more

“…The unique body morphology includes a grasping, finless tail, the head positioned at right angle to their trunk, a brood pouch sealed along the midline, and a raised dorsal fin base (Fritzsche, 1980) made them famous in curio, while the most special is not the appearance and the traditional use but the unusual features like male pregnancy (Zhang et al, 2003) (Fig. 1).…”

“…A cDNA library was constructed and 3372 cDNA clones were sequenced as described previously. 14 On the basis of the sequence alignment and NCBI BLAST, a new gene named hkplp was isolated, then the sequence data were deposited to NCBI (GenBank ID: AY864343). 14 …”
