Molecular Predictors of Response to Chemotherapy in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Abstract: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States with 222,520 new cases and 157,300 deaths anticipated in 2010. The primary objective of any cancer treatment is to improve patient outcomes including overall survival and quality of life while minimizing treatment toxicity. As our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of lung cancer evolves, improved methods of therapeutic selection may help clinicians better realize these goals. Such selection may be… Show more

“…Although there have been advances in modern cancer therapy, mortality rates of NSCLC patients have not changed significantly over the last decades [1], [2], [22]. With developing research in personalized cancer management, several biomarkers have been attributed a predictive value for specific chemotherapeutic agents [23][27]. Scagliotti et al described a benefit of gemcitabine in a platin-based chemotherapeutic regime for patients suffering from advanced NSCLC if histology showed a predominant squamous differentiation.…”

“…The treatment of lung cancer involves the use of medical therapies such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and palliative care (3) in an attempt to successfully treat or reduce the adverse impact of malignant neoplasms originating in lung tissue. Chemotherapeutic agents are the main treatment measures for NSCLC, but the side-effects are usually difficult to tolerate (4).…”
