Molecular Physics of Elementary Processes Relevant to Hypersonics: Electron-Molecule Collisions

Abstract: Non-resonant, electron-impact, vibro-electronic excitation cross sections, involving vibrationally excited N 2 molecules, to the mixed valence-Rydberg b,c,o+ singlet states are presented. These cross sections are calculated using the so-called similarity approach, accounting for the vibronic coupling among excited states, and compared with the experiments and different theoretical calculations.New cross sections for the electron-impact resonant vibrational excitation of CO 2 molecule are calculated, for the sy… Show more

“…To understand this point in Refs. [95,232] has been recalculated the hierarchy of the different rates by introducing in Figure 20: (left) Elastic electron-CO 2 resonant cross section: 1D results of Laporta et al [91] (solid line) compared with 1D boomerang model (short-dashed line) and MCTDH (the long-dashed) from Ref. [234]; (right) electron-impact resonant excitation of CO 2 symmetric modes, (000) → (v f 00), for different values of the final symmetric vibrational quantum number [91].…”

“…This implies that the scattering processes involves one mode only and does not affect at all the other two. Preliminary results for the symmetric stretch mode only, were given previously [19]. Here we present calculations on all the three normal modes of the molecule, for 0 ≤ ν i ≤ ν ′ i ≤ 10 (i = 1, 2, 3), and for electron collision energies from the threshold up to 10 eV.…”
