Molecular phylogeny and species delimitation of the genus Dicerapanorpa (Mecoptera: Panorpidae)

Abstract: Given that species is the fundamental unit in systematic biology, rigorous species delimitation is crucial for taxonomic studies, yet routine species delimitation remains an ongoing challenge in the taxonomic practice of insects. The two-horned scorpionfly Dicerapanorpa is a small genus in Panorpidae (Mecoptera) endemic to the Qinling-Bashan and Hengduan mountains, a biodiversity hotspot. However, species of Dicerapanorpa are difficult to delineate owing to marked intraspecific variation and interspecific simi… Show more

“…However, the interspecific relationships are not satisfactorily resolved in Cerapanorpa (Figs. 15, 16), probably due to their short divergence history (Miao et al ., 2017, 2019; Hu et al ., 2019) and great morphological resemblances (Gao et al ., 2016; Gao & Hua, 2019) among the congeners. This situation is also present in Dicerapanorpa , Megapanorpa and Sinopanorpa .…”

“…Based on our cladistic analysis, however, the N. denticulata group likely split from other members earlier than the N. chillcotti group. Given the East Asian origin and the relatively weak dispersal ability of the Panorpidae (Byers, 1988; Miao et al ., 2017; Hu et al ., 2019), the spreading of the common ancestor of the N. denticulata group to the Indian subcontinent was unlikely earlier than the collision between India and Eurasia that began 55.0 mya (Aitchison et al ., 2007). The Himalayan fauna is heterogeneous by composing the N. chillcotti group (ca.…”

“…In the taxa in which males have the sharp teeth, the genital segments of females often have conspicuous 'brown scars'. In Dicerapanorpa species, the scars occur on the female medigynium and subgenital plate and are melanized and often scabbed and extensive over the surface [35][36][37]. However, it remains unknown whether the female wounds are inflicted by the male's sharp teeth during mating.…”

“…The genus Dicerapanorpa Zhong & Hua, 2013, erected for the Panorpa diceras group (Cheng 1957), comprises 18 described species to date (Hu & Hua 2019;Hu et al 2019aHu et al , 2019c. The monophyly of Dicerapanorpa was confirmed by molecular (Hu et al 2015;Miao et al 2019) and morphological studies (Ma et al 2009(Ma et al , 2012.…”

“…The species of Dicerapanorpa are distributed in the Hengduan Mountains and the adjacent Qinling-Bashan Mountains (Fig. 1), and can be categorized into two groups (Hu & Hua 2019;Hu et al 2019a, 2019b, 2019c). The D. magna group is restricted to the Qinling, Bashan, and Minshan Mountains, and is characterized by the yellowish wing membrane with distinct wing markings and the rostrum without distinct lateral stripes.…”
