Molecular orientation of copper phthalocyanine thin films on different monolayers of fullerene on SiO2 or highly oriented pyrolytic graphite

Abstract: The interface electronic structures of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) have been studied using ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy as different monolayers of C60 were inserted between CuPc and a SiO2 or highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate. The results show that CuPc has standing up configuration with one monolayer of C60 insertion on SiO2 while lying down on HOPG, indicating that the insertion layer propagates the CuPc-substrate interaction. Meanwhile, CuPc on more than one monolayers of C60 on … Show more

“…Substrate templating with CuI, graphene and other organics have been reported for influencing the face-on or edge-on MPc orientation, and further stacking. 3,7,8 These molecular semiconductors have other vast applications that include gas sensors, electrocatalysts, supercapacitors, etc. to name a few.…”

“…For example, pentacene possesses a relatively higher mobility in its b-c plane than a-b plane, as shown in Figure 1e [6,7]. Thus, various substrates, metals [8][9][10], native oxide silica [11][12][13][14], and layered materials [6,7,[15][16][17][18], have been chosen for the growth of high quality thin films. In order to optimize the devices performance, it is essential to clarify how the interactions between molecules and substrates affect the growth of organic thin films.…”

“…The molecular orientation of both planar and nonplanar MPc molecules on oxide substrates such as SiO 2 is well known. The molecules were shown to preferably have an edge-on orientation [3,7,9,[27][28][29]. In our earlier studies, we have reproducibly obtained different crystallites of PbPc on substrates such as HOPG, Au(111), Si and SiO 2 .…”

“…A FDTS layer induces the edge-on arrangement regardless of the crystal phase, while a CuI interlayer induces the formation of triclinic PbPc moieties stacked face-on to the substrate yielding enhanced NIR absorption [6]. Organic molecules such as pentacene, fullerene and sexithiophene have also been utilized for inducing the growth of the triclinic phase [7,8]. These studies indicate that the growth of an organic film depends on the delicate interplay between the substrate-molecule and the molecule-molecule interactions.…”
