Molecular monitoring of bulking sludge in industrial wastewater treatment plants

Abstract: Fluorescent In Situ Hybridisation (FISH) was used to monitor the presence of filamentous microorganisms in industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Monitoring with a restricted set of FISH probes in WWTPs from potato industry showed growth and decline of Thiothrix populations that could be linked to operational procedures. “…A species-specific probe (HHY) targeting H. hydrossis was designed based on the type strain DSM1100 (Wagner et al, 1994). “…Filamentous Alphaproteobacteria have been shown to be very important in industrial WWTPs where they are often associated with bulking incidents or deteriorating settling properties of the sludge (Levantesi et al, 2004;van der Waarde et al, 2002).
