Molecular mechanisms underlying the renal protective effects of coenzyme Q10 in acute kidney injury

Abstract: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), an endogenous antioxidant, has been reported frequently to exert an outstanding protective effect on multiple organ injury, including acute kidney injury (AKI). In this study, we aim to summarize all the current evidence of the protective action of CoQ10 against AKI as there are presently no relevant reviews in the literature. After a systematic search, 20 eligible studies, either clinical trials or experimental studies, were included and further reviewed. CoQ10 treatment exhibited a pote… Show more

“…AKI is a commoncondition marked by a sudden decrease in renal function. Various pathological factors, including I/R, sepsis, trauma and exposure to nephrotoxic substances can trigger AKI [ 216 , 217 ]. Kidney I/R is one of the most common causes of AKI.…”

“…This mechanism can support lung cancer cell growth and facilitate their invasion [ 110 ]. Upregulation of miR-374b-5p in exosomes, derived from hypoxic tubular epithelial cells (TECs), reduces SOCS1 expression and promotes M1 macrophage activation during renal ischemia–reperfusion injury (RIRI) conditions [ 124 , 125 ]. Exosomes derived from polymorph nuclear neutrophils (PMNs) have an important role in sepsis-related ALI.…”

“…To fight kidney diseases, numerous therapeutic approaches have been explored [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. These include exogenous and endogenous compounds, dietary manipulations, modulation of metabolic pathways, stem cell approaches, and cell signaling processes [ 10 , 11 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. In this review article, we will focus on the role of lipoic acid in preventing and ameliorating kidney injuries.…”
