Molecular Mapping of 2 Environmentally Sensitive Male-Sterile Mutants in Soybean

Abstract: In soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], manual cross-pollination to produce large quantities of hybrid seed is difficult and time consuming. Identification of an environmentally stable male-sterility system could make hybrid seed production commercially valuable. In soybean, 2 environmentally sensitive male-sterile, female-fertile mutants (ms8 and msp) have been identified. Inheritance studies showed that sterility in both mutants is inherited as a single gene. The objectives of this study were to 1) confirm that… Show more

“…Physical maps of the soybean chromosomes showing locations of all known male-sterile, female-fertile genes. The length of the bar next to the gene name represents the physical region where the gene is located (Jin et al 1998;Cervantes-Martinez et al 2007, 2009Frasch et al 2011;Ott et al 2013). The putative location of the ms7 gene is determined based on a transposon tagging study (J. Gosh, M.K.…”

“…Although abnormalities occurred throughout the development of sporogenous tissue, abnormalities peaked near pachytene stage of meiosis (Stelly and Palmer 1982). The msp gene was mapped to molecular linkage group D1b (Frasch et al 2011).…”

“…The ms2 gene positioned on LG “O” between markers Sat_190 and Scaa001 with a distance of 6.9 and 9.0 cM, respectively (Cervantes‐Martinez et al, ). Moreover, ms5 , ms7 , ms8 and ms9 were mapped to LG “B1, K, M and N”, respectively (Cervantes‐Martinez et al, ; Frasch, Weigand, Perez, Palmer, & Sandhu, ; Ott et al, ; Yang et al, ), and ms6 gene showed linkage with the flower colour locus w1 (Palmer, Holland, & Lewers, ; Skorupska & Palmer, ). The MFMF gene from male‐sterile and female‐sterile soybean mutant was mapped to LG “D1a”, close to the marker, Satt531 with 9.4 cM distance from the gene (Baumbach et al, ).…”
