Molecular lanthanide single-ion magnets: from bulk to submonolayers

Abstract: Single-ion magnets (SIMs) are mononuclear molecular complexes exhibiting slow relaxation of magnetization. They are currently attracting a lot of interest because of potential applications in spintronics and quantum information processing. However, exploiting SIMs in, e.g. molecule-inorganic hybrid devices requires a fundamental understanding of the effects of molecule-substrate interactions on the SIM magnetic properties. In this review the properties of lanthanide SIMs in the bulk crystalline phase and depos… Show more

“…Regarding SMMs, a fast-growing number of mononuclear 3d/4f compounds that display slow relaxation of the magnetization have recently been introduced [7][8][9]. In this regard, the use of external magnetic fields to cancel an often-present fast zero-field relaxation of the magnetization [10,11], as well as the observation www.mdpi.com/journal/magnetochemistry of frequency dependence in 3D mononuclear species with negative but also positive [12,13] zero-field splitting (D) values, have been key factors toward the development of the subject.…”

“…For perfect D 4d local symmetry, the QTM should be completely suppressed. 27 The twist angles between the diagonals of the two tetrapyrrole coordination squares are associated with the molecular symmetry. In an ideal SAP coordination site with D 4d local symmetry, the ligand field potential provides only diagonal matrix elements, where no mixing among the «J z ª states occurs.…”
