Abstract:The reaction of bismuth triiodide with iodine and benzo-15-crown-5 in ethanol/dichloromethane yielded red single crystals of (b15c5)BiI 3 (I 2 ) (monoclinic, P2 1 /c (no. 14), a = 1376.9(1), b = 1172.7(1), c = 1700.2(2) pm, β = 115.197(6), V = 2484.1(4)·10 6 pm 3 , Z = 4). Neutral pseudo-octahedral complexes (b15c5)BiI 3 are connected by secondary bonding interactions via iodine molecules to chains. Electronic structure calculations of the neutral complex (b15c5)BiI 3 reveal that the compound can indeed be described as b15c5 interacting with a molecular BiI 3 unit. However, bonding has to be mainly electrostatic as the interactions of the bismuth 6s lone pair with the 2p orbitals of the oxygen atoms of the crown ether are clearly antibonding.

Pd dissolution capabilities of a variety of organic triiodides (OrgI3) in organic solvent, where Org+ = 3,5-bis(phenylamino)-1,2-dithiolylium [(PhHN)2DTL+], 3,5-bis(morpholino)-1,2-dithiolylium (Mo2DTL+); tetrabuthylammonium (TBA+); and tetraphenylphosphonium (Ph4P+), toward the crude metal and model-spent three-way catalyst (TWC), are described here. Enhanced Pd-leaching yields from TWC were obtained using OrgI3 solutions (up to 98%) in spite of the fully inorganic KI3 one (38%) in the same mild conditions. The reaction products were isolated and characterized as Org2[Pd2I6]. Crystallographic and DFT studies highlighted the presence of several ion-pair secondary interactions in the products, which can explain the improved effectiveness of the Pd etching by OrgI3. For comparison purposes, the gold leaching by using R2DTLI3 and the obtained Au complexes were investigated. Preliminary results addressed to recover the metal and the reagents from the etching product showed that (PhHN)2DTLI3 is the most promising reagent to improve sustainability in the whole process

Palladium I 8000 Molecular Iodine Catenation in the Anionic Chains [Pd2I6(I2)] 2-. -Black single crystals of [(H 5 O 2 )(dibenzo-24-crown-8)] 2 [Pd 2 I 6 (I 2 )] are prepared by room temperature evaporation of a CH2Cl2/ EtOH (1:1) solution of PdCl2, I2, and dibenzo-24-crown-8. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with Z = 1 (single crystal XRD).
