Molecular Inflammation in the Contralateral Eye After Cataract Surgery in the First Eye

Abstract: This study revealed that expression of MCP-1, a pain-related inflammatory chemokine, was significantly increased in aqueous humor in the contralateral eye after first-eye cataract surgery. This suggests there may be a sympathetic ophthalmic type uveitis in the contralateral eye after first-eye cataract surgery and that may help to explain why second-eye phacoemulsification is often more painful. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT01824927.)

“…Symmetric diurnal fluctuation of intraocular pressure has been reported in normal eyes and eyes with glaucoma (Realini et al 2002;Dinn et al 2007). The aqueous humour protein level was changed in both treated and contralateral eyes in a neurogenic inflammation model or following cataract surgery (Gonzalez et al1993;Zhu et al 2015). A unilateral experimental neurotrophic keratopathy model could cause bilateral nerve alteration (Yamaguchi et al 2013).…”

“…Another possibility is that the significant inflammatory reaction in eye with stromal ulceration may have caused inflammation in the contralateral eye. “…For the remaining 24 animals, 3 of them were euthanized with pentobarbital sodium by intraperitoneal injection at a lethal dose of 100 mg/ kg at each time point; their treated eyes were enucleated and processed for histologic study. Considering the potential effects of surgical stimulation on the contralateral untreated eye, 27 eight animals in the control group were left without surgery. The control group had OCT examination only when they reached the age of 5 months, which was the same age as the surgery group at 3 months postoperatively.…”
