Molecular Identification of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei Tapeworm in Cases of Human Sparganosis, Hong Kong

Abstract: Human sparganosis is a foodborne zoonosis endemic in Asia. We report a series of 9 histologically confirmed human sparganosis cases in Hong Kong, China. All parasites were retrospectively identified as Spirometra erinaceieuropaei. Skin and soft tissue swelling was the most common symptom, followed by central nervous system lesions.

“…The major aetiological agent of human sparganosis is Spirometra erinaceieuropaei which is mainly acquired by the consumption of undercooked or uncooked meat of frogs and snakes (Anantaphruti et al ., 2011). Although S. erinaceieuropaei was distributed globally, most sparganosis cases occur in eastern and southeastern Asian countries (Almeida et al ., 2016; Tang et al ., 2017). China has the largest number of sparganosis cases in the world with more than 1000 cases have been reported, scattered over almost all administrative areas, so sparganosis still poses a serious threat to human health in China (Liu et al ., 2015).…”

“…A domestic retrospective genetic analysis and sequencing analysis of 9 cases of human sparganosis in Hong Kong. The results showed that the 9 samples could be confirmed as S. erinaceieuropaei by the cox 1 and 28S rRNA genes identification [17].…”

“…Spirometra erinaceieuropaei is a zoonotic parasite causing sparganosis in humans. It has been identified in humans in Vietnam and other countries in Asia, such as Korea, China and Thailand (Anantaphruti et al, 2011;Le et al, 2017;Tang et al, 2017;Kim et al, 2018;Muigg et al, 2019). This larva found in the pig was very small and, thus, could easily have been ignored during meat inspection.…”
