We present Herschel far-infrared (FIR) observations of two sub-mm bright quasars at high redshift: SDSS J1148+5251 (z = 6.42) and BR 1202−0725 (z = 4.69) obtained with the PACS instrument. Both objects are detected in the PACS photometric bands. The Herschel measurements provide additional data points that constrain the FIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of both sources, and they emphasise a broad range of dust temperatures in these objects. For λ rest 20 μm, the two SEDs are very similar to the average SEDs of quasars at low redshift. In the FIR, however, both quasars show excess emission compared to low-z QSO templates, most likely from cold dust powered by vigorous star formation in the QSO host galaxies. For SDSS J1148+5251 we detect another object at 160 μm with a distance of ∼10 from the QSO. Although no physical connection between the quasar and this object can be shown with the available data, it could potentially confuse low-resolution measurements, thus resulting in an overestimate of the FIR luminosity of the z = 6.42 quasar.

We report on the detection of bright CO(4-3) line emission in two powerful, obscured quasars discovered in the SWIRE survey, SW022513 and SW022550 at z ≥ 3.4. We analyze the line strength and profile to determine the gas mass, dynamical mass, and the gas dynamics for both galaxies. In SW022513 we may have found the first evidence for a molecular, AGN-driven wind in the early Universe. The line profile in SW022513 is broad (FWHM = 1000 km s −1 ) and blueshifted by −200 km s −1 relative to systemic (where the systemic velocity is estimated from the narrow components of ionized gas lines, as is commonly done for AGN at low and high redshifts). SW022550 has a more regular, double-peaked profile, which is marginally spatially resolved in our data, consistent with either a merger or an extended disk. The molecular gas masses, 4×10 10 M , are large and account for <30% of the stellar mass, making these obscured QSOs as gas rich as other powerful CO emitting galaxies at high redshift, i.e., submillimeter galaxies. Our sources exhibit relatively lower star-formation efficiencies compared to other dusty, powerful starburst galaxies at high redshift. We speculate that this could be a consequence of the AGN perturbing the molecular gas.

Abstract. Although the richness of the millimeter/submillimeter sky has been known for the last two decades, precision imaging of the sky has been impossible at all but the longest wavelengths. The Millimeter Array (MMA) will consist of 36 precision 10m antennas located above 5000m altitude in the Atacama Desert of Chile. It will apply aperture synthesis techniques for precision imaging of the cool thermal sky, particularly those objects which can now only be studied in the far infrared with coarse angular resolution. The MMA will offer unprecedented sensitivity-it will image a galaxy with the dust mass of the Milky Way at z=l in one minute. The images the MMA will produce of this and high z systems will be high resolution images: the MMA will offer unprecedented angular resolution for imaging cool matter, providing images at a few hundredths arcsecond resolution. The MMA provides extinction-free spectroscopy of dusty high z systems. The MMA is currently under development; construction is scheduled to begin in 2001 with operations scheduled to begin in 2008.
