Molecular functions of small regulatory noncoding RNA

Abstract: Recently, using large-scale genomic sequencing, a great number of small noncoding RNAs (ncRNA) has been discovered. Short ncRNAs can be classified into three major classes--small interfering RNA (siRNA), microRNA (miRNA), and piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA). These short ncRNAs ranging from 20 to 300 nt in size are now recognized as a new paradigm of gene regulation for controlling many biological processes. In this paper, we review the biogenesis and recent research on the functions of small regulatory non-coding… Show more

“…In eukaryotes, mi/si/piRNAs typically bind to the 3′-UTRs of their target mRNAs, leading to translational inhibition and/or degradation of the mRNAs (reviewed in ref. 80). In both domains, a number of computational approaches have been established that allow a genome-wide in silico search for putative targets of a specific sRNA 81 - 83 .…”

“…This view has changed dramatically during the last decade and today it is clear that sRNAs are widespread in all three domains of life and have in fact been found in every species that has been tested [1][6]. The numbers of known sRNAs, their biological functions, and the different mechanisms of action that are uncovered, increase steadily.…”

“…Non-coding RNA species play very significant role in regulation of the protein synthesis via various mechanisms (Huang et al 2013). These regulating non-coding RNA (ncRNA) species include small RNAs (Bonnet et al 2006) and large non-coding RNA (Rinn and Chang 2012).…”
