“…Molecular analyses and phylogenetics have greatly influenced our understanding of delineating species-complexes, evaluating traditional taxonomic groups, and estimating relationships among taxa (e.g., Jousson et al 2000, Nolan and Cribb 2005, Olson and Tkach 2005, Yang and Rannala 2012, Curran et al 2013. While these tools are extremely useful, they often have problems estimating relationships between taxa when broadly defined morphological taxa (e.g., Macvicaria Bray, 1982, andNeolebouria Gibson, 1976) are used in the analysis without including the type species (Andres et al 2014).…”

“…Jousson et al, 2000;Hunter et al, 2010;Calhoun et al, 2013;Curran et al, 2013). Especially where the species occur in sympatry, we suspect that circumstances comparable to those discussed above have underpinned trematode speciation.…”

“…There also occur a few freshwater species from fundulids not inhabiting the southeast, but they are being described and they appear similar to H. pallidum. In freshwater in Mississippi and Louisiana, there are two cryptic species similar to Homalometron armatum, which occur northward to Lake Erie and Ontario, Canada, as well as in Mississippi, and can be separated by molecular means but with unreliable morphological differentiation (Curran et al 2013b). A similar Gulf and Caribbean species, Homalometron elongatum, infecting a gerreid and appearing more elongated than H. pallidum and also possessing three pairs of relatively large opposing oral papillae projecting from near the mouth, makes it distinguishable from H. pallidum and another species by both molecular and minor morphological differences.…”
