“…However, MLST has been found to be as discriminatory as PFGE for distinguishing between temporally related isolates and the epidemic-causing isolates in different outbreaks caused by C. jejuni (42). The ability of MLST to have the same value for epidemiological typing as that of PFGE, AFLP, and ribotyping has also been demonstrated before (10). In the current study, PFGE resulted in good discrimination, but it did not discriminate as well as MLST.…”

“…Although this method has been used successfully to characterize C. jejuni strains and identify clonal lineages within the species (6,11,13,43,60), it cannot characterize strains from other, clinically relevant Campylobacter species (e.g., C. coli and C. upsaliensis), nor can it address interspecies genetic exchange within the genus. Therefore, an expanded MLST typing system was developed, encompassing four additional species: C. coli, C. lari, C. upsaliensis, and C. helveticus.…”

“…The necessity of a reliable typing method to characterize C. jejuni strains and investigate the epidemiology of C. jejuni infections provided the impetus for the development of a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) system for C. jejuni. This method was developed by Dingle et al (12) and has been used successfully to characterize C. jejuni strains (11,13,43,59,63) and investigate C. jejuni outbreaks (60). As with MLST methods developed in other taxa, this system amplifies and sequences portions of seven housekeeping genes.…”

“…ST-21, ST-475, ST-918, and ST-937 were represented by both human and chicken isolates. Thirteen (43%) isolates belonged to novel STs, suggesting that unique STs circulate in local geographic regions (5).…”
