Early Mode of Life and Hatchling Size in Cephalopod Molluscs: Influence on the Species Distributional Ranges

Cephalopods (nautiluses, cuttlefishes, squids and octopuses) exhibit direct development and display two major developmental modes: planktonic and benthic. Planktonic hatchlings are small and go through some degree of morphological changes during the planktonic phase, which can last from days to months, with ocean currents enhancing their dispersal capacity. Benthic hatchlings are usually large, miniature-like adults and have comparatively reduced dispersal potential. We examined the relationship between early developmental mode, hatchling size and species latitudinal distribution range of 110 species hatched in the laboratory, which represent 13% of the total number of live cephalopod species described to date. Results showed that species with planktonic hatchlings reach broader distributional ranges in comparison with species with benthic hatchlings. In addition, squids and octopods follow an inverse relationship between hatchling size and species latitudinal distribution. In both groups, species with smaller hatchlings have broader latitudinal distribution ranges. Thus, squid and octopod species with larger hatchlings have latitudinal distributions of comparatively minor extension. This pattern also emerges when all species are grouped by genus (n = 41), but was not detected for cuttlefishes, a group composed mainly of species with large and benthic hatchlings. However, when hatchling size was compared to adult size, it was observed that the smaller the hatchlings, the broader the latitudinal distributional range of the species for cuttlefishes, squids and octopuses. This was also valid for all cephalopod species with benthic hatchlings pooled together. Hatchling size and associated developmental mode and dispersal potential seem to be main influential factors in determining the distributional range of cephalopods.

Seasonal Movement Patterns of the Bigfin Reef Squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana Predicted Using Statolith δ18O Values

Sepioteuthis lessoniana is a widely distributed neritic squid in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. It is an important species in fisheries, but species management is difficult because of inadequate information regarding its life history. The daily growth and δ 18 O values from the core to the edge of statoliths of S. lessoniana collected in northern Taiwan were analyzed to predict the experienced temperature history along with ontogenetic stages. The probability of occurrence in a given area at each life stage in three seasonal groups was determined using salinity values, deduced and measured temperatures, and the known ecology of S. lessoniana. The results showed that ontogenetic variation in the statolith δ 18 O values in S. lessoniana reflected the seasonal temperature fluctuation observed in Taiwanese waters, which indicated the reliability of the prediction method. Complex and diverse distribution and movement patterns were observed in the three seasonal groups. The results also indicated the importance of the waters near the coast of northeastern Taiwan as a spawning ground. Based on a model prediction, the distribution of S. lessoniana is likely associated with water temperature and current. A potential migration route from the Penghu Islands to northeastern Taiwan suggests a high level of population connectivity in S. lessoniana in Taiwan. This study provides information on the spatial and vertical distribution of S. lessoniana at various ontogenetic stages, which is essential for resource management and conservation of this commercial species.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the morphometrics of three harvested cephalopods, Sepioteuthis lessoniana, Sepia officinalis and Uroteuthis sp. found in northern sea of Aceh Province, Indonesia. Sampling was conducted for six months from July to December 2012 in one week interval. A total of 318 cephalopods; 139 Sepioteuthis lessoniana, 139 Uroteuthis sp. and 40 Sepia officinalis were analyzed for morphometric study and 13 anatomical characters were measured to the nearest 0.01 mm using a digital caliper. Morphometric measurements were significantly different between the different species of cephalopods (ANOVA, p<0.05). S. officinalis differed in six morphological characters (head length, head width, tentacles length, gladius width, rancis width and length) from the squid species. Fin width and length were significantly greater in S. lessoniana than in S. officinalis and Uroteuthis sp. On the other hand, Uroteuthis sp. had significantly greater mantle lengths, standard lengths and gladius lengths than the other two cephalopod species (Duncan Test, p<0.05). However, fin width was similar between S. lessoniana and Uroteuthis sp., while eye diameter was similar between S. officinalis and Uroteuthis sp. A Discriminant Function Analysis scatter plot successfully discriminated the three species indicating significant differences in morphological variation. This analysis also indicates that morphometrically, S. lessoniana and S. officinalis are more similar to each other despite being in different orders.
