Molecular Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Diverse Environmental Samples Globally

Abstract: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has swamped the global environment greatly in the current pandemic. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) effectively forecasts the surge of COVID-19 cases in humans in a particular region. To understand the genomic characteristics/footprints and diversity of SARS-CoV-2 in the environment, we analyzed 807 SARS-CoV-2 sequences from 20 countries deposited in GISAID till 22 May 2021. The highest number of sequences (n = 638) were reported in Austria, … Show more

“…SARS‐CoV‐2 is a hazard for free‐ranging wild and aquatic animals. Climate change along with pollution of water by sewage and other contaminants helps the virus to spread (Islam et al., 2021c). The sharp decline in the health of our planet also increases the chance of generating more mutant viruses and adapting to a new host.…”

“…Moreover, similar to influenza, the coronaviruses can cause rapid mutation and new strains through reassortment. Several variants of SARS-CoV-2 have already been detected in humans, animals, and the environment in various countries [28,118,179,180]. Thus, continuous genomic surveillance in human-animal-environmental interfaces is necessary to understand the molecular evolution and forecast upcoming pandemics by any CoVs.…”

“…The delta variant was reported from environmental samples in November 2020. However, from January 2021, the alpha variant was slowly increasing in environmental samples [140]. This trend persisted until June 2021.…”

“…Another phylogeny for the omicron variant from environmental samples has been shown in Figure 4, whereas the phylogeny for the delta variant has been shown in Figure 5. This variant of the environment and humans in the same regions shows genetic resemblance [140]. For Omicron, the environmental strains from the USA are grouped with human strains from Italy, the USA, and Mexico; environmental strains from Austria are grouped with human strains from Belgium and Austria; environmental strains from Liechtenstein are grouped with human strains from Belgium, USA, and Austria.…”
