Molecular Epidemiology of Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 Viruses from Pakistan in 2009–2010

Abstract: BackgroundIn early 2009, a novel influenza A(H1N1) virus that emerged in Mexico and United States rapidly disseminated worldwide. The spread of this virus caused considerable morbidity with over 18000 recorded deaths. The new virus was found to be a reassortant containing gene segments from human, avian and swine influenza viruses.Methods/ResultsThe first case of human infection with A(H1N1)pdm09 in Pakistan was detected on 18th June 2009. Since then, 262 laboratory-confirmed cases have been detected during va… Show more

“…Therefore, they usually have less time to spend with the family to discuss the importance or the role of religious clerics during such pandemics. In the past, Pakistan has experienced SARS, MERS, H1N1 flu, and dengue (Khan et al, 2008;Hakim et al, 2011;Aamir et al, 2012;Saqib et al, 2017). In the history of Pakistan, religious clerics have not been active in case of any endemic and have not played a pivotal role in spreading awareness about the outbreaks of different diseases or taking any necessary measure.…”

“…Since then, no comprehensive assessment of the surveillance data has been conducted. Previous studies in Pakistan have looked at the molecular epidemiology and clinical factors associated specifically with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus infection during the 2009 to 2010 pandemic 15,16 . Another study analyzed influenza surveillance data for the period 2008 to 2011 in only four sentinel sites 3 .…”

“…[1][2][3] Influenza A virus subtypes H3N2 (A/H3N2) and H1N1 (A/ H1N1), and influenza B virus have been circulating in the human population every winter, and account for 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness and 250 000 to 500 000 deaths annually, mostly caused by secondary bacterial pneumonia in young children and the elderly. [4][5][6][7] To reduce the public health burden of influenza, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends annual influenza vaccination and recommends the four strains to be included in vaccine composition. Seasonal vaccine strains are recommended twice a year because of the differences in the duration of winter in the Southern Hemisphere and Northern Hemisphere.…”
