Molecular Environments of Supernova Remnants

Abstract: Abstract. There are about 70 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) that are now confirmed or suggested to be in physical contact with molecular clouds (MCs) with six kinds of evidence of multiwavelength observations. Recent detailed CO-line spectroscopic mappings of a series of SNRs reveal them to be in cavities of molecular gas, implying the roles the progenitors may have played. We predict a linear correlation between the wind bubble sizes of main-sequence OB stars in a molecular environment and the stellar mas… Show more

“…The integrated CO line emission with a high high-to-low excitation line ratio in the line wing is suggested as a probe of the SNR-MC interaction (Seta et al 1998;Jiang et al 2010;Chen et al 2014). The 12 CO (J=2-1) / 12 CO (J=1-0) ratio map in the left (blue) wing 85 − 88 km s −1 is shown in Figure 7.…”

“…Further observations, for example, searching for 1720 MHz OH maser around the remnant (see discussion in Chen et al 2014 andGiacani 2015), are needed to verify the physical association between the large cavity and remnant.…”

“…So far, there are several signposts to show the physical contact/interaction between SNRs and their molecular environments, e.g., the presence of 1720 MHz OH maser emission, molecular line broadenings or asymmetric profiles, high molecular line ratios between different excitation states, detection of H 2 and/or [Fe II] lines in near-infrared, specific infrared colors within an SNR, and often used morphological correspondence in multiwavelength with SNR features (see Jiang et al 2010). It is also important to study the interplay of SNR-MC systems for investigating various physical and astrophysical processes therein (e.g., Chen et al 2014;Dubner & Giacani 2015;Slane et al 2015).…”

“…There are currently 294 SNRs known in the Milky Way (Green 2014) and about 70 of them are confirmed or suggested to be associated with MCs (refer to, e.g., Jiang et al 2010;Chen et al 2014). CO, as an indicator of H 2 , is the most widely used tracer of MCs and it is very common and useful when investigating the nature of the molecular ISM in galaxies.…”
