Molecular engineering of polymeric supra-amphiphiles

Abstract: Polymeric supra-amphiphiles are amphiphiles that are fabricated by linking polymeric segments, or small molecules and polymeric segments, by noncovalent interactions or dynamic covalent bonds.

“…Solid state XB was additionally verified with FTIR measurements where CF peak shifts strongly, indicating halogen bonding. Although self‐assembly systems of cavitands and polymers have been widely reported, halogen‐bonded systems are still largely unexplored . In the future studies, this XB‐based system could be further explored in several ways, for example, by adding a guest molecule to the macrocycle to increase the overall functionality or by using a more gradual solvent switch to prospectively achieve more diverse morphologies …”

“…These materials can further be utilized for diverse applications including gene and drug delivery, selfhealing, adsorbents, adhesives, sensing and soft materials. [23][24][25][26][27][28][29] Highly complicated supramolecular structures, such as supramolecular amphiphiles, supramolecular polymers, and molecular machines, have been successfully developed [30][31][32][33] based on hostguest complexation using the aforementioned macrocycles. Macrocycles can be broadly classified into two categories based on their solubility.…”

“…In contrast to covalent-bond based amphiphiles, supraamphiphiles pioneered by Zhang and co-workers take advantage of supramolecular chemistry, in which the hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts are usually connected by non-covalent interactions, greatly simplifying the otherwise complexed synthetic process of amphiphilic species. [6][7][8][9] Among various supramolecular interactions, macrocyclic host-guest recognitions are widely used to construct supra-amphiphiles. 10 For example, Huang and co-workers summarized the recent advances in macrocyclic host-based supra-amphiphiles.…”
