Molecular Dynamics Study on the Welding Behavior in Dissimilar TC4-TA17 Titanium Alloys

Abstract: Titanium alloys have become the material of choice for marine parts manufacturing due to their high specific strength and excellent resistance to seawater corrosion. However, it is still challenging for a single titanium alloy to meet the comprehensive specifications of a structural component. In this study, we have applied a molecular dynamics approach to simulate the aging phase transformation, K-TIG welding process, and mechanical properties of the TC4-TA17 (Ti6Al4V-Ti4Al2V) alloy. The results show that dur… Show more

“…The maximum hardness of the weld zone increased from about 200 HV 0.10 to about 250 HV 0.10 . In general, the microhardness of each weld area improved to a certain extent, about 45 HV 0.10 , showing that surface sandblasting effectively improves surface hardness [ 18 , 19 , 20 ]. This is because sandblasting provides high strain conditions for the surface layer of the titanium plate, resulting in a large number of dislocations on the surface layer.…”

“…The structure of diamond and graphene is mainly described by LCBOP, Tersoff, and AIREBO potentials [48][49][50]. In this paper, the Ti, Al, and V interatomic interactions are depicted by the EAM potential [51]. The interactions between the C atoms of diamond and the C atoms of graphene and between diamond and graphene are described by the LCBOP potential.…”

“…Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) is one of the most commonly utilized welding techniques for titanium alloys, because it produces high-quality welds with a composition closely resembling the parent metal [4][5][6][7][8]. These welds exhibit significant strength and enduring corrosion resistance.…”
