Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Alkylsilane Monolayers on Silica Nanoasperities: Impact of Surface Curvature on Monolayer Structure and Pathways for Energy Dissipation in Tribological Contacts

Abstract: Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkylsilanes have been considered as wear reducing layers in tribological applications, particularly to reduce stiction and wear in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. Though these films successfully reduce interfacial forces, they are easily damaged during impact and shear. Surface roughness at the nanoscale is believed to play an important role in the failure of these films because it effects both the formation and quality of SAMs, and it focuses interfacial con… Show more

“…Table ) demonstrate the high quality of the OTS‐SAM: the electron density of the tail group of 0.359(9)Å −3 indicates a very dense layer of chains. Theoretically, for rigid and perfectly upright standing silanes, this corresponds to about four silane chains per nm 2 , which also agrees with the arrangement seen in molecular dynamics simulations . For the tail group layer, the effective density model gives a thickness of 20.7(1)Å, which is in agreement with the bare length of the OTS tail group .…”

“…The lower friction pair was a square plate made from AISI 316L stainless steel with a size of 20 9 20 9 2 mm, the surface of which was polished to a roughness of Ra = 2.7 nm over the area of 1 lm 9 1 lm measured by the tapping mode AFM (Veeco). The roughness of the lower-friction pair was quite close to that of the stainless steel coating on quartz crystal sensor, minimizing the difference in adsorption behavior caused by roughness [44]. A zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ) ball (obtained from Sinomaceramics, Beijing, China) was used as the upper friction pair with a diameter of 6.35 mm and surface roughness of Ra = 20 nm.…”

“…Neste sentido, a Figura 3 apresenta um exemplo de possível aplicação de NPs funcionalizadas. A funcionalização pode ocorrer pela adição de grupos químicos funcionais à superfície de uma NP, conferindo novas funções, características ou propriedades ao material, alterando a química da superfície (EWERS, 2012, RIGO, 2014, DE LARA, 2015, 2015a Condicional: se raio_átomo_candidado > referência, faça: j = j + 1;…”
